Hello there,
For August, we discuss potential positive changes to Medicare, as well as not-so-positive changes to Social Security rules. We also take a look at the best states for a happy retirement (they’re not the places you think). Click on the links below for more information.
How a Proposed Medicare Part E Could Benefit Americans
House Democrats are seeking to establish a Medicare Part E that would operate through ACA marketplaces and include essential health benefits. It would also fill coverage gaps, lower private insurance premiums through competition, and help families with subsidies, out-of-pocket caps, and lower drug prices.
- The Part E proposal would ban discrimination based on preexisting conditions.
- The bill would extend protections across individual and employer markets.
- A companion Senate version has been introduced and awaits committee review.
Approaching Retirement Age? View the Senior Happiness Index
Caring.com’s 2025 Senior Happiness Index identifies states where seniors are most content, connected, and live longest. Surprisingly, these states are not the ones most associated with retirement, such as Florida and Arizona.
- Utah is the state ranked as the happiest for older adults, due to high levels of engagement, access to medical care, and healthier overall lifestyles.
- Idaho is the second-happiest state.
- When it comes to countries, Finland ranks happiest for seniors.
New Social Security Rule Means More Travel for Older Adults
A new SSA rule requires recipients to verify their identity online or in person for direct deposit changes, eliminating phone services. This change disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, including older adults, by forcing them to travel long distances to understaffed offices.
- The SSA says this step strengthens fraud prevention efforts.
- Advocacy groups argue that requiring individuals to visit SSA offices creates barriers for vulnerable populations.
- In 10 states, at least 40% of seniors will need to drive for an hour or more to reach their local SSA office.
